Just few steps from the Golden Well Hotel you can find Nerudova street (Nerudova Ulice) which is a beautiful ancient road, part of the famous Royal Way, the route the Czech Kings used to follow during their coronation parade.

nerudova-street-signToday you can find many souvenir shops there, but what’s most remarkable about this street are the house signs and the people that lived in that houses. Why house signs? The house numbers were introduced in Prague in 1770. Before that the houses were recognized by their signs and Nerudova street has a vast collection of them.

Nerudova street got its name after a famous Czech poet and journalist Jan Neruda who wrote many short stories about this Prague district. Jan Neruda used to lived in this street between 1849 and 1857. He lived in the house At the Two Suns (no. 47) at the upper part of the street. The house sign belongs among the most beautiful ones.

The house At the Three Fiddles (no. 12) reminds us the history of this house – it used to host three families who made their living by making violins. They were so successful that they exported their products abroad. It’s said that during the full moon you can still hear mysterious tones of violins.

st-nicholasThe house At the Red Lion (no. 41) can be recognized by a red lion holding a golden cup in his fore paw. The house used to be the home of Petr Brandl, famous Czech painter, whose work can be seen at the Church of St Margaret in Prague-Brevnov or the Church of St James.

The Historical Pharmacies exhibition that belongs to the National Museum can be found (and smelled) in the house At the Golden Lion (no. 32). You can learn there about the Culture of Pharmaceutical Work and Pharmacies in Bohemia and Moravia from the Renaissance up to the 19th century.

JOHN LENNON IN PRAGUE

3999940133_ce74d73417

This is no joke – John Lennon is in Prague – well, to be precise, his wall is in Prague although John Lennon himself never visited Prague in his short life. Are you confused? Let me explain it to you then.

In Mala Strana, near the French Embassy, you´ll see the John Lennon Wall. The wall that was formerly an ordinary wall in Prague has been called Lennon´s since the 1980´s, when people have filled it with John Lennon – inspired graffiti and pieces of lyrics from Beatles songs.

Lennon was a hero to the pacifist youth of Central and Eastern Europe during the totalitarian era. Prior to 1989 when communism ruled, western pop songs were banned by Communist authorities, and especially John Lennon´s songs, because it was praising freedom that didn´t exist here. Some musicians were actually jailed for playing it!

The wall, located at Velkoprevorske namesti in Mala Strana, is owned by the Knights of the Maltese Cross, who allowed graffiti to continue. It will be a symbol forever.

How to get there from Golden Well Hotel:

go to the Malostranske namesti and take direction to the Charles Bridge, then turn first street to the right “Lazenska” and go still straight to Velkoprevorske namesti – it´s 5 minutes walking distance.

Explore the charming Ledeburska Garden

Prague is full of romantic hideaways…

Explore the wonderful palace´s gardens right next to the Golden Well Hotel – Ledeburska Garden. This baroque terraced garden dates back to the 18th century and offers a quiet, hidden venue, away from the tourists. You, as our guests can enjoy a charming garden with a unique ambience and splendid views of the historical Lesser Town.

The direct entrance to the gardens from the restaurant terrace used to serve as a private entrance for the Emperor Rudolf II.

History of the Ledegurska Garden:

Prague Castle was heavily defended during the middle ages. When artillery reduced the importance of fortifications, the land outside the walls became available for garden-making. The uppermost garden, south of the castle, is known as the Garden on the Ramparts, were made in conjunction with Maria Theresa’s mid-eighteenth century palace. This garden has a baroque flavor and commands fine views of the city. Below this level, to the south, are a series of what were once private gardens which were extensively restored between 1973 and 1997. Street signs describe them as ‘Gardens beneath Prague Castle’ and there is an entrance fee. Individually, the gardens are named after the families which owned them: the Ledeburska Garden, the Small Palffy garden, the Large Palffy Garden, the Kolowratska Garden and the Small Furstenberska Garden. Like most private gardens, they were subject to constant re-design. Careful historical work preceded the restoration but, with the exception of the Small Furstenberska Garden, which was in better condition, it has produced a sameness of treatment. Yet the gardens are of considerable interest. They have vineyards, small parterres, fruit trees and herb gardens.
